HIV Awareness
HIV is one of the most sexually transmitted disease there is. In the Philippines alone, there is approximately 1000 reported cases every month since 2016 and 96% of the patients are male. So as part of the HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention month, TGL Philippines staff and participants conducted a seminar last December 19, 2019 at Inagawan Sub-Colony attended by 504 inmates and few correction officers.
First speaker was Sheena (participant) and Helen (coordinator), they talked about what HIV and AIDS is about and how it can be acquired. Next was Darlene (participant) and Glory (CM), they talked about the different stages of HIV/AIDS, symptoms and causes. Lastly, Alvin (participant) and Miko (coordinator), they discussed about the HIV/AIDS in the Philippines. After the said forum, we prepared questions which whoever answers right gets price. We could really see the interactions, their interest to learn and surprisingly the inmates were very enthusiastic.
We have received the appreciation from the Bureau of Corrections- Inagawan Sub-Colony as well as the inmates, weโve realized that being punished or being inside the cells is not a hindrance to continue learning as we could really see and feel everyoneโs presence during the discussion and their eagerness to learn. TGL Philippines is planning to continue spreading knowledge about HIV awareness to everyone.
